Volga-Dnepr fits Russian-made Kontur-10SV weather radar to Il-76TD-90VD RA-76511
Testing ended in June 2026, and the aircraft is already flying commercial cargo. The company says the work on this aircraft lays the groundwork for refitting its entire Il-76TD-90VD fleet.
The Volga-Dnepr group of companies has completed a comprehensive avionics upgrade on its Il-76TD-90VD heavy transport aircraft registered RA-76511, according to aviaport.ru. The group operates Volga-Dnepr Airlines, a Russian cargo airline flying Antonov and Ilyushin freighters. AviaPort, a Russian aviation news site, published the report on 30 October 2026, citing www1.ru. The aircraft received a Russian-made Kontur-10SV weather radar, and some systems of its Kupol-III-76M-VD flight and navigation suite were modified.
Work began in 2024. It was carried out by the operator’s specialists and by Volga-Dnepr Engineering, which the report names as the developer. The aircraft then went through ground and flight tests, which ended in June 2026. RA-76511 now flies commercial services.
What was installed
The main replacement is the weather radar. The Kontur-10SV helps pilots spot hazardous weather on the route in advance, including convective zones, where strong updrafts build thunderclouds. The source describes it as follows:
Pilots can use the new device for early detection of potentially hazardous meteorological phenomena and critical convective zones along the route.

The radar also detects wind shear, a sudden local change in wind speed and direction. The source stresses that wind shear is especially dangerous during take-off and landing.
The second part of the work concerns the Kupol-III-76M-VD suite. It determines the aircraft’s position and attitude, provides navigation and controls the heavy transport aircraft in automatic flight. The source does not specify which systems in the suite were modified. It refers only to “certain systems”.
What happens to the rest of the fleet
According to the source, the work on RA-76511 lays the technical groundwork for the planned modernisation of the airline’s entire Il-76TD-90VD fleet. The report states the aim of the upgrade as maintaining a high level of safety for cargo operations on international and domestic routes.
For shippers, the main gap in the report is timing. The source gives no schedule for refitting the remaining aircraft and does not say how the work will affect their availability for flights. The report also does not give the number of Il-76TD-90VD aircraft in the Volga-Dnepr fleet, the cost of the upgrade or the manufacturer of the Kontur-10SV.
What this means for shippers
For those moving heavy and outsize cargo on the Il-76, the news gives no reason yet to change carriers or booking plans. The report mentions no change to carriage terms on upgraded aircraft, and RA-76511 is already flying commercial services.
The news shows how the company is upgrading its fleet. On RA-76511, Volga-Dnepr installed a Russian-made weather radar and modified part of the navigation suite through its own engineering unit. The radar helps the crew spot hazardous weather and wind shear in advance. The source does not compare it with the previous equipment.
The refit of the rest of the fleet is worth watching. Whether shippers need to allow extra time in delivery schedules for Il-76TD-90VD flights depends on details the report does not give: the refit schedule, how long each aircraft will be out of service and how the company will cover flights during that time. Volga-Dnepr has not yet disclosed this.
