According to The Loadstar, disruption in ocean shipping is not driving a mass shift of cargo to air freight. Achim Martinka, global head of air freight at logistics company DSV, said this last week. He was speaking at the TIACA Air Cargo Forum in Miami.

Martinka said shippers move cargo to air when the expected losses from a delay outweigh the premium for flying it. Emergency airfreight is expensive, and for most cargo the numbers do not add up. “Most customers are still staying with ocean freight,” the publication quoted Martinka as saying.

The Loadstar summed up DSV’s view in its headline: ocean disruption on its own is not enough to bring airlines a large volume of new cargo. The part of the article available without a subscription does not say how many shippers did switch cargo to air, or in which sectors.
